Finding the Signal in the Noise: An Exploratory Study on Assessing the Effectiveness of AI and Accessibility Forums for Blind Users’ Support NeedsAccessibility forums and, more recently, generative AI tools have become vital resources for blind users seeking solutions to computer-interaction issues and learning about new assistive technologies, screen reader features, tutorials, and software updates. Understanding user experiences with these resources is essential for identifying and addressing persistent support gaps. Towards this, we interviewed 14 blind users who regularly engage with forums and GenAI tools. Findings revealed that forums often overwhelm users with multiple overlapping topics, redundant or irrelevant content, and fragmented responses that must be mentally pieced together, increasing cognitive load. GenAI tools, while offering more direct assistance, introduce new barriers by producing unreliable answers, including overly verbose or fragmented guidance, fabricated information, and contradictory suggestions that fail to follow prompts, thereby heightening verification demands. Can Good Writing Be Generative? Expert-Level AI Writing Emerges through Fine-Tuning on High Quality BooksCreative writing has long been considered a uniquely human endeavor, requiring voice and style that machines could not replicate. This assumption is challenged by Generative AI that can emulate thousands of author styles in seconds with negligible marginal labor. To understand this better, we conducted a behavioral experiment where 28 MFA writers (experts) competed against three LLMs in emulating 50 critically acclaimed authors. Based on blind pairwise comparisons by 28 expert judges and 131 lay judges, we find that experts preferred human writing in 82.7% of cases under the in-context prompting condition but this reversed to 62% preference for AI after fine-tuning on authors' complete works. Lay judges, however, consistently preferred AI writing. Debrief interviews with expert writers revealed that their preference for AI writing triggered an identity crisis, eroding aesthetic confidence and questioning what constitutes "good writing." KeySense: LLM-Powered Hands-Down, Ten-Finger Typing on Commodity TouchscreensExisting touchscreen software keyboards prevent users from resting their hands, forcing slow and fatiguing index-finger tapping (“chicken typing”) instead of familiar hands-down ten-finger typing. We present KeySense, a purely software solution that preserves physical keyboard motor skills. KeySense isolates intentional taps from resting-finger noise with cognitive–motor timing patterns, and then uses a fine-tuned LLM decoder to turn the resulting noisy letter sequence into the intended word. In controlled component tests, this decoder substantially outperforms 2 statistical baselines (top-1 accuracy 84.8% vs 75.7% and 79.3%). A 12-participant study shows clear ergonomic and performance benefits: compared with the conventional hover-style keyboard, users rated KeySense as markedly less physically demanding (NASA-TLX median 1.5 vs 4.0), and after brief practice, typed significantly faster (WPM 28.3 vs 26.2, p <0.01). Lost in Instructions: Study of Blind Users’ Experiences with DIY Manuals and AI-Rewritten Instructions for Assembly, Operation, and Troubleshooting of Tangible ProductsAI tools like ChatGPT and Be-My-AI are increasingly being used by blind individuals. Although prior work has explored their use in some Do-It-Yourself (DIY) tasks by blind individuals, little is known about how they use these tools and the available product-manual resources to assemble, operate, and troubleshoot physical/tangible products – tasks requiring spatial reasoning, structural understanding, and precise execution. We address this knowledge gap via an interview study and a usability study with blind participants, investigating how they leverage AI tools and product manuals for DIY tasks with physical products. Findings show that manuals are essential resources, but product-manual instructions are often inadequate for blind users. AI tools presently do not adequately address this insufficiency, in fact, we observed that they often exacerbate this issue with incomplete, incoherent, or misleading guidance. From Selfie Stick to Virtual Cane: Enabling Blind Exploration through Mobile Virtual RealityConventional VR experiences rely heavily on visual input, creating barriers for individuals who are blind or have low vision (BLV). We present a mobile VR system that enables BLV users to explore virtual environments independently using a smartphone as a simulated white cane, augmented with spatial audio and haptic feedback. Built on ubiquitous consumer devices, the system supports embodied exploration and encourages physical movement, with multimodal feedback to help users transfer real-world cane techniques into virtual spaces and build mental maps. Be Friendly, Not Friends: How LLM Sycophancy Shapes User TrustLLM-powered conversational agents are increasingly influencing our decision-making, raising concerns about “sycophancy”–the tendency for LLMs to excessively agree with users even at the expense of truthfulness. While prior work has primarily examined LLM sycophancy as a model behavior, our understanding of how users perceive this phenomenon and its impact on user trust remains significantly lacking. In this work, we conceptualize LLM sycophancy along two key constructs: conversational demeanor (complimentary vs. neutral) and stance adaptation (adaptive vs. consistent). A 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment (𝑁 = 224) revealed complex dynamics: complimentary LLMs that adapted their stance reduced perceived authenticity and trust, while neutral LLMs that adapted enhanced both, suggesting a pathway for manipulating users into over-trusting LLMs beyond their actual capabilities. FairPlay: A Collaborative Approach to Mitigate Bias in Datasets for Improved AI FairnessThe issue of fairness in decision-making is a critical one, especially given the variety of stakeholder demands for differing and mutually incompatible versions of fairness. Adopting a strategic interaction of perspectives provides an alternative to enforcing a singular standard of fairness. We present a web-based software application, FairPlay, that enables multiple stakeholders to debias datasets collaboratively. With FairPlay, users can negotiate and arrive at a mutually acceptable outcome without a universally agreed-upon theory of fairness. In the absence of such a tool, reaching a consensus would be highly challenging due to the lack of a systematic negotiation process and the inability to modify and observe changes. Enabling Auto-Correction on Soft Braille KeyboardA soft Braille keyboard is a graphical representation of the Braille writing system on smartphones. It provides an essential text input method for visually impaired individuals, but accuracy and efficiency remain significant challenges. We present an intelligent Braille keyboard with auto-correction ability, which uses optimal transportation theory to estimate the distances between touch input and Braille patterns, and combines it with a language model to estimate the probability of entering words. The proposed system was evaluated through both simulations and user studies. In a touch interaction simulation on an Android phone and an iPhone, our intelligent Braille keyboard demonstrated superior error correction performance compared to the Android Braille keyboard with proofreading suggestions and the iPhone Braille keyboard with spelling suggestions. It reduced the error rate from 55.81% on Android and 57.13% on iPhone to 19.80% under high typing noise. Furthermore, in a user study of 12 participants who are legally blind, the intelligent Braille keyboard reduced word error rate (WER) by 59.5% (42.53% to 17.28%) with a slight drop of 0.74 words per minute (WPM), compared to a conventional Braille keyboard without auto-correction. MACEDON : Supporting Programmers with Real-Time Multi-Dimensional Code Evaluation and OptimizationRecent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have led programmers to increasingly turn to them for code optimization and evaluation. However, programmers need to frequently switch between code evaluation and prompt authoring because there is a lack of understanding of the underlying code. Yet, current LLM- driven code assistants do not provide sufficient transparency to help programmers track their code based on the intended evaluation metrics, a crucial step before aligning these evaluations with their optimization goals. To address this gap, we adopted an iterative, user-centered design process by first conducting a formative study and a large-scale code analysis. Based on the findings, we then developed MACEDON, a system that supports multi-dimensional code evaluation in real time, direct code segment optimization, as well as shareable report displays. We evaluated MACEDON through a controlled lab study with 24 novice programmers and two real-world case studies. The results show that MACEDON significantly improved users’ ability to identify code issues, apply effective optimizations, and understand their code’s evolving state. Our findings suggest that multi-dimensional evaluation, combined with interactive, segment-specific guidance, empowers users to perform more structured and confident code optimization. Tap&Say: Touch Location-Informed Large Language Model for Multimodal Text Correction on SmartphonesWhile voice input offers a convenient alternative to traditional text editing on mobile devices, practical implementations face two key challenges: 1) reliably distinguishing between editing commands and content dictation, and 2) effortlessly pinpointing the intended edit location. We propose Tap&Say, a novel multimodal system that combines touch interactions with Large Language Models (LLMs) for accurate text correction. By tapping near an error, users signal their edit intent and location, addressing both challenges. Then, the user speaks the correction text. Tap&Say utilizes the touch location, voice input, and existing text to generate contextually relevant correction suggestions. We propose a novel touch location-informed attention layer that integrates the tap location into the LLM's attention mechanism, enabling it to utilize the tap location for text correction. We fine-tuned the touch location-informed LLM on synthetic touch locations and correction commands, achieving significantly higher correction accuracy than the state-of-the-art method VT. Influencer: Empowering Everyday Users in Creating Promotional Posts via AI-infused Exploration and CustomizationCreating promotional posts on social platforms enables everyday users to disseminate their creative outcomes, engage in community exchanges, or generate additional income from micro-businesses. However, crafting eye-catching posts with appealing images and effective captions can be challenging and time-consuming for everyday users since they are mostly design novices. We propose Influencer, an interactive tool that helps novice creators quickly generate ideas and create high-quality promotional post designs through AI. Influencer offers a multi-dimensional recommendation system for ideation through example-based image and caption suggestions. Further, Influencer implements a holistic promotional post-design system supporting context-aware exploration considering brand messages and user-specified design constraints, flexible fusion of content, and a mind-map-like layout for idea tracking. SeQR: A User-Friendly and Secure-by-Design Configurator for Enterprise Wi-FiA classic problem in enterprise Wi-Fi is client-side misconfiguration, which enables credential theft via “Evil Twin” (ET) attacks. To mitigate this, we design, develop, and evaluate a new configurator, SeQR, which allows users to effortlessly and securely set up an enterprise Wi-Fi connection. Utilizing existing authenticated channels, SeQR fully automates the client-side enterprise Wi-Fi configuration process with a simple scan, leaving no room for misconfigurations. Specifically, SeQR thwarts ET by making it impossible for users to opt-out from the security-critical certificate validation. We evaluate the efficacy of SeQR on two fronts. First, we implement a prototype of SeQR in Android, and test its functionality and runtime performance. Next, we compare the usability of SeQR against two existing Wi-Fi configuration interfaces of Android in an in-person user study (n=41) with real devices. SpellRing: Recognizing Continuous Fingerspelling in American Sign Language using a RingFingerspelling is a critical part of American Sign Language (ASL) recognition and has become an accessible optional text entry method for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) individuals. In this paper, we introduce SpellRing, a single smart ring worn on the thumb that recognizes words continuously fingerspelled in ASL. SpellRing uses active acoustic sensing (via a microphone and speaker) and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to track handshape and movement, which are processed through a deep learning algorithm using Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss. We evaluated the system with 20 ASL signers (13 fluent and 7 learners), using the MacKenzie-Soukoref Phrase Set of 1,164 words and 100 phrases. Offline evaluation yielded top-1 and top-5 word recognition accuracies of 82.45% (±9.67%) and 92.42% (±5.70%), respectively. In real-time, the system achieved a word error rate (WER) of 0.099 (±0.039) on the phrases. LLM Powered Text Entry Decoding and Flexible Typing on SmartphonesLarge language models (LLMs) have shown exceptional performance in various language-related tasks. However, their application in keyboard decoding, which involves converting input signals (e.g. taps and gestures) into text, remains underexplored. This paper presents a fine-tuned FLAN-T5 model for decoding. It achieves 93.1% top-1 accuracy on user-drawn gestures, outperforming the widely adopted SHARK2 decoder, and 95.4% on real-word tap typing data. In particular, our decoder supports Flexible Typing, allowing users to enter a word with taps, gestures, multi-stroke gestures, and tap-gesture combinations. User study results show that Flexible Typing is beneficial and well-received by participants, where 35.9% of words were entered using word gestures, 29.0% with taps, 6.1% with multi-stroke gestures, and the remaining 29.0% using tap-gestures. BIT: Battery-free, IC-less and Wireless Smart Textile Interface and Sensing SystemThe development of smart textile interfaces is hindered by the inclusion of rigid hardware components and batteries within the fabric, which pose challenges in terms of manufacturability, usability, and environmental concerns related to electronic waste. To mitigate these issues, we propose a smart textile interface and its wireless sensing system to eliminate the need for ICs, batteries, and connectors embedded into textiles. Our technique is established on the integration of multi-resonant circuits in smart textile interfaces, and utilizing near-field electromagnetic coupling between two coils to facilitate wireless power transfer and data acquisition from smart textile interface.A key aspect of our system is the development of a mathematical model that accurately represents the equivalent circuit of the sensing system. Using this model, we developed a novel algorithm to accurately estimate sensor signals based on changes in system impedance. Belief Miner: A Methodology for Discovering Causal Beliefs and Causal Illusions from General PopulationsCausal belief is a cognitive practice that humans apply everyday to reason about cause and effect relations between factors, phenomena, or events. Like optical illusions, humans are prone to drawing causal relations between events that are only coincidental (i.e., causal illusions). Researchers in domains such as cognitive psychology and healthcare often use logistically expensive experiments to understand causal beliefs and illusions. In this paper, we propose Belief Miner, a crowdsourcing method for evaluating people’s causal beliefs and illusions. Our method uses the (dis)similarities between the causal relations collected from the crowds and experts to surface the causal beliefs and illusions. Through an iterative design process, we developed a web-based interface for collecting causal relations from a target population. We then conducted a crowdsourced experiment with 101 workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk and Prolific using this interface and analyzed the collected data with Belief Miner. Accessible Gesture Typing on Smartphones for People with Low VisionWhile gesture typing is widely adopted on touchscreen keyboards, its support for low vision users is limited. We have designed and implemented two keyboard prototypes, layout-magnified and key-magnified keyboards, to enable gesture typing for people with low vision. Both keyboards facilitate uninterrupted access to all keys while the screen magnifier is active, allowing people with low vision to input text with one continuous stroke. Furthermore, we have created a kinematics-based decoding algorithm to accommodate the typing behavior of people with low vision. This algorithm can decode the gesture input even if the gesture trace deviates from a pre-defined word template, and the starting position of the gesture is far from the starting letter of the target word. Hand Gesture Recognition for Blind Users by Tracking 3D Gesture TrajectoryHand gestures provide an alternate interaction modality for blind users and can be supported using commodity smartwatches without requiring specialized sensors. The enabling technology is an accurate gesture recognition algorithm, but almost all algorithms are designed for sighted users. Our study shows that blind user gestures are considerably different from sighted users, rendering current recognition algorithms unsuitable. Blind user gestures have high inter-user variance, making learning gesture patterns difficult without large-scale training data. Instead, we design a gesture recognition algorithm that works on a 3D representation of the gesture trajectory, capturing motion in free space. Our insight is to extract a micro-movement in the gesture that is user-invariant and use this micro-movement for gesture classification. To this end, we develop an ensemble classifier that combines image classification with geometric properties of the gesture. Teaching artificial intelligence in extracurricular contexts through narrative-based learnersourcingCollaborative technology provides powerful opportunities to engage young people in active learning experiences that are inclusive, immersive, and personally meaningful. In particular, interactive narratives have proven to be effective scaffolds for learning, and learnersourcing has emerged as a promising student-driven approach to enable personalized education and quality control at-scale. We introduce the first synthesis of these ideas in the context of teaching artificial intelligence (AI), which is now seen as a critical component of 21st-century education. Specifically, we explore the design of a narrative-based learnersourcing platform where engagement is centered around a learner-made choose-your-own-adventure story. In grounding our approach, we draw from pedagogical literature, digital storytelling, and recent work on learnersourcing.
